Kentucky Homeschool Law โ€” The Basics

Kentucky is a moderately homeschool-friendly state with clear, manageable requirements. Here's what you need to know to stay compliant.

๐Ÿ“„

Annual Notification

File a written notification with your local school board within 10 days of the start of each school year. You must name your homeschool. This is your primary required submission.

Must provide at least 170 instructional days per year totaling 1,062 hours. Instruction must be in English.

๐Ÿ“š

8 Required Subjects

Reading, writing, spelling, grammar, history, mathematics, science, and health. No state-mandated curriculum โ€” you choose how to teach them.

๐Ÿ“

No Testing Required

Kentucky does not require standardized testing for homeschool students. Assessment is at the family's discretion.

๐Ÿ‘ค

Parent Qualifications

No teaching license or state approval required. No minimum education level specified in state statute for teaching your own children.

๐Ÿซ

Name Your Homeschool

Kentucky requires your homeschool to have a name โ€” you can choose anything. This is included in your annual notification to the school board.
