Ohio Homeschool Law — The Basics
Ohio has clear, manageable homeschool requirements and a strong community of support organizations across the state.
Annual Notification by August 1
File annual notification with your local school superintendent by August 1. Includes a brief educational plan. Simple form available through OHEN or your school district.
HSLDA Ohio guide →900 Hours per Year
Must provide at least 900 hours of instruction per year. No requirement on daily minimums — you can structure the year as you like.
Core Subjects Required
Must teach language arts, math, science, social studies, fine arts, first aid, health, and physical education. No state-mandated curriculum.
Annual Assessment
Annual assessment of student progress required via: standardized test, licensed teacher assessment, or portfolio review. Results go to the superintendent on request.
Parent Qualifications
Must hold a high school diploma or GED, OR work under the direction of a licensed teacher. No teaching license required.
Ohio EdChoice Scholarship
Ohio expanded its EdChoice scholarship program. Eligible families may receive funding toward private or home education expenses. Check OHEN for current homeschool eligibility.
