North Carolina Homeschool Law โ The Basics
North Carolina is considered a moderately regulated homeschool state with clear requirements that most families find straightforward to meet.
Annual Notice to DNPE
File an annual notice with the NC Division of Non-Public Education (DNPE) each year. Simple online form. This is your primary required submission.
File at DNPE โ9 Months of Instruction
Must provide instruction for at least nine calendar months per year. No minimum daily hours specified in state law.
English Language Arts & Math
At minimum, must teach reading, language arts, and mathematics. Families typically cover a full curriculum but only ELA and math are explicitly required.
Annual Standardized Testing
NC requires annual standardized testing beginning in 1st grade. Results stay in the family's records โ you do not submit them to the state.
Parent Qualifications
Must hold a high school diploma or GED to operate a home school. No teaching license required.
Classified as Non-Public School
NC homeschools are legally classified as non-public schools. You operate under the same statutes as private schools, giving you significant legal protection.
