Texas Homeschool Law — The Basics
Texas is one of the most homeschool-friendly states in the nation. Requirements are minimal, giving families maximum freedom.
No Registration Required
Texas requires zero notification, registration, or approval from the state or local school district. Homeschools are legally recognized as private schools under Texas Education Code.

No minimum days or hours required by law. The state recommends following a similar calendar to public schools, but it is not mandated.
5 Required Subjects
Reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics, and good citizenship must be covered. No state-mandated curriculum. You choose the approach and materials.
No Testing Required
Texas does not require any standardized testing or assessments for homeschool students. Completely at family discretion.
No Parent Qualifications
No teaching license, degree, or state approval required to homeschool your children in Texas.
Texas Education Freedom Accounts
New ESA program (TEFAs) providing up to $2,000/year per homeschool student for approved educational expenses. First window opened February 2026.
