Tennessee Homeschool Law — The Basics
Tennessee offers three legal pathways for homeschooling, giving families flexibility in how they structure their home education program.
Three Legal Options
Option 1: Independent home school (file with local school director). Option 2: Church-related school umbrella. Option 3: Category III (supervised by a licensed teacher). Most families use Option 1.

Independent home schools must provide at least 4 hours of instruction per day for 180 days per year. Umbrella schools set their own schedules.
5 Required Subjects
Language arts, math, social studies, science, and health must be taught. No state-mandated curriculum. You choose the materials and approach.
Annual Portfolio Review
Independent home schools must have an annual review of student work (portfolio). Umbrella school families follow their school's assessment requirements.
Parent Qualifications (Option 1)
Must hold a high school diploma or GED. For Category III, a licensed teacher must be involved. No requirement for Option 2 (umbrella school).
Tennessee ESA Program
Tennessee's Education Savings Account program provides public school funding for eligible students to use toward private or homeschool educational expenses.
