Michigan Homeschool Law — The Basics
Michigan is one of the least restrictive states for home education. Most families homeschool under the homeschool statute, which has no notification requirement at all — here's what you need to know.
No Notification Required
Michigan's homeschool statute does not require notifying your local school district or the state that you're homeschooling. A courtesy letter to your child's former school can help avoid truancy confusion, but it isn't legally required.

Reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar. High schoolers' civics instruction must cover the state and U.S. Constitutions. No state-approved curriculum required.
No Testing Required
Michigan does not require standardized testing for homeschooled students. Families who want it can arrange for their student to take state assessments through their resident district.
Parent Qualifications
No teaching license, degree, or state approval required to teach your own children under the homeschool statute.
No Naming Requirement
Unlike some states, Michigan does not require you to give your homeschool a formal name or register it as a private school to use the homeschool statute.
Nonpublic School Option
A smaller number of families instead register as a nonpublic school, which does require an annual report to Michigan's Department of Education (by December 1) and at least 4 hours of daily instruction. Most homeschoolers use the simpler statute option above instead.

Detroit-Area Homeschool Co-ops
A mix of secular and faith-based options across Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties. Verify current enrollment status directly with each group.
Wayne County Home Schoolers Co-Op
Cooperative classes for K-12 students across fall and spring semesters — 12 co-op days per semester, topics ranging from art to PE to science, with some classes offered hybrid via Google Classroom/Zoom.

Detroit-Area Field Trips & Homeschool Programs
These Southeast Michigan institutions offer group field trip programs, dedicated discounts, or free admission that make them especially homeschool-friendly.
The Henry Ford (Dearborn)
Home educators get a 25% discount on memberships, plus a discounted group field trip rate for groups of 10+ across the Museum, Greenfield Village, and Ford Rouge Factory Tour. Dedicated reservation line for home educators: 313-982-6001.

General admission is always free for residents of Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties (funded by a tri-county millage). The DIA also offers free school field trips with transportation included — a strong option for Detroit-metro families. Washtenaw County residents are not covered by the millage.
